Happening Now : News and Analysis

YEAR OF 2017

  • President Trump's Proposed 2018 budget for the Dept. of Justice office *Request to increase bankruptcy-filing fees. The budget for the Dept of Labor office *Request to eliminate the Senior Community Service Employment Program due to more workers of subsidized employment efforts, by our government, than private-sector or unsubsidized or unsupported governmental employment efforts.
  • President Trump's Proposed 2018 budget for the Dept. of Energy office *Request to eliminate the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, the Title 17 Innovative Technology Loan Guarantee Program, and the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program, the Weatherization Assistance Program and the State Energy Program to reduce Federal intervention in State-level energy policy and implementation [Me: Huh! the Weatherization Assistance Program offers low-income and senior citizens the opportunity to have free or reduced repairs to their homes. I thought political leaders were concentrating on how to have or maintain American homes in our neighborhoods and communities.]. The budget for the Dept. of Health and Human Services office *The budget would initiate a new Federal Emergency Response Fund for faster response to health-challenge outbreaks. *Request to eliminate $403 million in health professions and nursing training programs, yet maintain funding for health-care college scholarships and loan- repayment choices. [Me: Can someone please tell me why the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) are a part of the Department of Health and Human Services office? These two programs should have always been a part of, respectively, the Dept. of Energy (LIHEAP program centers) and the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (CSBG program centers)]. The budget for the Dept. of Homeland Security would no longer allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to crisscross with State-level activities and programs. FEMA, again, is a federal program initiated only when local-community needs demand such actions and officially acknowledged within specific state-based actions.
  • President Trump's Proposed 2018 budget for the Dept. of Defense office *Request to add $54 billion increase towards our military offices and programs, overall, the most requested funding by any president in our history. [Jobs! in the sector for jobseekers who may be interested, or simply loyalists who would like to serve a'coming.]   The budget for the Dept. of Education office will add to the school-choice options for students and families (whether it be public-school, private-school, or charter-school building), [No comments were highlighted of how support would be given to the home-schooling choice option.], the budget would like to provide more or maintain existing Title 1 programs (whether per program for a specific teaching setting or grade level or entire school-building model), and adding a new private-school choice funding program. *Request to eliminate the Supporting Effective Instruction State Grants program, 21st Century Community Learning Centers program (I would have lost my job again . . . again!--through budget cuts- if I had taken an earlier job offer to run this program in a local state, near my home state of Maryland, under this Administration), Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant program, to reduce the Federal Work-Study program, and it also makes the request to eliminate or reduce funding to other programs: Striving Readers, Teacher Quality Partnership, Impact Aid Support Payments for Federal Property, and international education programs.
  • President Trump's Proposed 2018 budget for the Dept. of Agriculture office does not request to eliminate the Program for Women, Infant, and Children (otherwise known as WIC). The program would have a budget of $6.2 billion. A reduction of buying private property and turning into federal lands is proposed. A reduction of staff is also requested at the USDA's Service Center Agencies.  The budget for the Dept of Commerce office *Request to eliminate the Water and Wastewater Loan and Grant program, and does request to eliminate the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education program; Economic Development Administration; Minority Business Development Agency (would be incorporated into the Small Business Administration's (SBA's) district office and centers); Manufacturing Extension Partnership program; and, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grants and programs supporting coastal and marine management, research, and education including Sea Grant.
  • President Trump's Proposed 2018 Budget.*Request to eliminate the Community Development Block Grant program (savings of $3 billion during his presidential term), and the HOME Investment Partnerships Program; Choice Neighborhoods; Self-help Homeownership Opportunity Program; and, the Section 4 Capacity Building for Community Development and Affordable Housing. The federal government is allowing state and local governments to handle such programs and services within their assigned lands: similar to school-system activities. In other words, allowing said governments to have the right to do what they want without breaking federal laws. If they break federal laws, with such new freedoms and supervision, then the federal government will take power over programs again.

A budget request, for HUD, of $40.7 billion vs. $46.9 billion (normal amount of money requested, yearly). If approved, this will be a decline of 13.2% decrease of monies towards HUD's housing programs and community programs [storefronts and other large-building welfare-type assistance for business construction program]. There are allegedly 4.5 million citizens that are receiving some type of HUD rental help each year. Estimated there are just over 318 million American citizens, total, in our country (Source: US Census, 2014).

  • A New York Homestyle Stood Firm Under Recent Weather
  • Public schools and local-community citizens have the power to make rules for their assigned schooling systems, right?  Some public schooling districts closed abruptly, for one day, to honor International Women's Day. 75% of our public-school teachers are women, according to a recent employment poll.
  • Me: Mr. Carson, immigrants are formally classified as people who come from another country, and have chosen or would like to become citizens of another continent. It is my opinion that Africans, who came here on slave ships, didn't really have a choice in coming to our country. Therefore, they wouldn't be identified under America's definition of immigrants.
  • "A Day Without a Woman" Strike
  • American History in Pictures at this College. I thought historically "small" bags of picked cotton.Thankful but saddened, I didn't have to carry those bags!
  • Topic of usage of descriptive word "pioneers" used to describe HBCUs. Me: HBCUs are (education leadership) pioneers of school choice. Does anyone think that it wasn't a challenging-and-inspiring moment when such building goals were just a thought, created into a vision strategy then, actually turned into a reality--usable buildings that could be used by blacks only?
  • There is nothing really wrong with the thoughts of the laws that early mankind created in regards to our Constitution. Like someone stated "What is wrong is that instead of having "united states," we have states that have a vision of not working along with other states, or the federal government ." We have citizens in our states that don't really want to work together as the North America continent.  Me: What is really wrong is the unproductive actions, the ways of human beings being human beings (governmental staffers and other networks) that actually cause bad views of some of our much-appreciated civic and welfare-assistance laws.

  • Jan. 30--A Goal of Decreasing the Wild Horse Population
  • Jan. 25--I don't believe that a great country, like ours, should lower our stand on judicial actions involving torture.  Our Congress has addressed such actions, and concluded that it is immoral and unfair treatment of any mankind, in this country; most recent law.  We Americans have said, by a majority, that we believe all criminals--doesn't matter of the severity of the crime--has the right to a trial and humane conditions while imprisoned.
  • HOUSING HUD Confirmation Nomination (Ben Carson) Hearing Today, 1/12/17,     beginning at 10 a.m.  Families and veterans, let's send a clear message--to the next administration--that we value affordable housing, local buildings, and community block grants.

Did you know that states--that would like to merge--must make

the request known to Congress before doing so? Congress must agree --first, otherwise

Internationally and the U.S. now have a limit of how much

cash that can be carried in wallets and purses (citizens or visitors): use

credit or debit card. Every citizen should own a debit card and at least

China's Financial Challenge has been unending for about two

years, now communicated more globally; also, Puerto Rico's and Brazil's.

Europe's Financial Challenge, Greece Is Not the Only Country of Worry. Economic challenges include government and private debt of Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Germany. European Central Bank is the major financial organization of the continent of Europe.

Today we are thankful that we live in a country that has created its own freedoms which were made by a multicultural citizen population. At the age of seven, I began my public servant career pathway. I didn't think twice of serving in my home town community, for many years. I never imagined that the doors that I opened for others would one day read for me "Warning, this door will never be open to you again." Let's continue the opportunities, the freedoms and the foundations that we have already created for all of our citizens: the democratic systematic approaches of balancing our now population and efforts for our future generations.

I believe that the Confederate flag should be housed in a local museum -although, I acknowledge it is a symbol of the State's (South Carolina) history. The question is, how long does the majority, of our citizens, want to remember such history? The flag is not being flown at someone's unique household for personal interest; it can be seen waving at a government capitol building.  Why was it not flown at half-staff on the day after the most current sorrow? Is it time to create a new symbol viewpoint at one of our state governmental buildings? You must decide, families or unique households.

"The sick (of mind or of disparities taught to them) reveal to us the existence of universal problems with which those who are well manage somehow to come to terms, without finding real solutions to them.  I always think of the sick as a sort of magnifying-glass which shows up an anxiety which we all have within us, more or less unconsciously." - Paul Tournier
